General:When should I apply?
Due to small class size, space is limited. Application should be made well in advance of your intended program start date. If you are applying from overseas we recommend you apply at minimum 12 weeks prior to the program start date; to allow sufficient time for issuance (if necessary) of your entry VISA to Canada and/or study permit.
Is there a deadline to apply?
Provided space is available, we will accept students into the program until the day classes begin. If a course is full, you may opt to be placed on a waiting list or other arrangements can be explored by contacting the Administration Office, please email [email protected] or visit the Administration Office, Room 301 (3rd floor).
How do I apply?

What is the minimum age to join a program?
Students must be 18 years or age and older at the start date of their program.
Do I need to supply my transcript to take an English program?
No. Anyone 18 years of age or older may enrol in one of our English Language Programs.
Will I be required to take a placement test?
Yes. To best serve your needs and learning goals, when you arrive to RELA you will be required to take a placement test. Your test score will determine your level of English proficiency and appropriate Stage placement.
What level of proficiency is required to join an ESL program?
We offer programs for any level learner, Beginner (no English proficiency) to Advanced. Your placement test score will determine your level of English proficiency and appropriate Stage placement.
What is the average class size?
In order to allow our instructors the capability of focusing and meeting each students’ needs our classrooms consist of no more than 12 students per class.
When do your programs begin?
We offer year round full-time and part-time programs, allowing you the flexibility to learn at your own pace. Please refer to Start Dates/Holidays: http://relaesl.com/programs/
When will I know if I am accepted?
Once we receive your application and payment, your application will be processed within 2 business days. A Letter of Acceptance will not be sent to you unless both the application and payment are received.
How long are your programs?
Please visit the Programs section of the website for full details including durations. Customized programs will vary in length and will be mutually agreed upon.
What does a routine class schedule look like?
Schedules vary based on program selection and class. A sample Class Schedule can be found on page 14 of Student Information Booklet. Classes are held Monday to Friday. Class start and end times vary however classes will not start prior to 9:00am. For students registered in a full-time ESL program classes routinely run from 9:00am to 4:15pm. RELA reserves the right to adjust the timing of all classes.
Is there a language policy?
Yes, students are expected to only use English at all times. Please refer to RELA’s Student Policies and Regulations for more details. Only by practicing will your fluency improve.
What should I do if I will arrive after the start date of my program?
If you anticipate delays in arriving by the start date of your program, you must notify the ESL Administration Office by sending an email message to [email protected] as soon as possible. We will do our best to find a suitable solution.
What happens if I wish to change my program or schedule after I begin?
Students are permitted to switch a program provided their teacher recommends the change (for example moving to a higher or lower Stage of study). Changes to contracts (from part-time to full-time or private instruction) must be approved by the Director or Finance and Administration and additional fees will apply.
What will I receive after completing a program?
Upon successful completion of each Stage of the RELA English Academic Program (REAP) or RELA General English Program (RGEP), students will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement.
Upon completion of the Proficiency Exam Preparation (PEP) or Harmonized English Learning Program (HELP) students will receive a Certificate of Participation.
Do you offer homestay services?
We will provide you with information to assist you. You must make your own arrangements, RELA assumes no responsibility or liability.
Finance:How much will it cost to study?
Depending on your chosen program and duration of study, fees will vary. Please refer to Fee Information
Will I need to buy textbooks?
Yes. A $100.00CAD fee for textbooks will be assessed at time of registration.
Is there an application fee?
Yes there is a non-refundable fee of $100.00CAD. Does not apply to registered students. RELA students wishing to re-register must visit the ESL Administration Office.
When do I have to pay my tuition fees?
Once you receive your Letter of Acceptance, 60 days prior to the start date of your program you are required to submit your $250.00CAD registration deposit.
Your full tuition payment is due 30 days prior to the start date of your program. If payment is not received by the deadline RELA has the right to cancel your program reservation.
How do I pay?
You can pay using one of the following methods:
- Certified Cheque made payable to: Regal English Language Academy Ltd.
- Money Order made payable to: Regal English Language Academy Ltd.
- Wire transfer/EFT Deposit
- Supply a written Financial Guarantee from your Scholarship Administrator (if applicable)
Any bank fees associated to Wire/EFT transfers, money orders or certified cheques are the responsibility of the applicant/student.

Do I need to purchase health/medical insurance?
Yes. Medical expenses are costly in Canada. In order to protect your wellbeing, it is mandatory for you to hold adequate medical insurance for the duration of your study term at RELA. You will not be permitted to class without proof of valid medical insurance. Please refer to the Medical Information section of the website for full details.
What if I already have health/medical insurance?
If you demonstrate you have valid adequate medical coverage (you may be requested to provide a copy of the plan benefits including limits and exclusions in English) we will waive the health insurance fee. You will be required to show proof of coverage when you arrive to RELA to register.
Students who are exempted from purchasing health insurance through RELA will be required to sign a Health Insurance Waiver Form.
How much money should I bring to Canada?
Estimated living expenses can be found in the Student Information Booklet page 7 to 9. Please remember the costs are estimates and your required budget might be higher or lower depending on your preferred lifestyle.
Refunds:What is the tuition refund policy?
To qualify all refund requests must be sent in writing prior to the period specified below:
- If you cancel before the start date of your program you will receive a refund of the tuition fee paid minus the registration deposit of $250.00CAD.
- If you withdraw after registration and before 4:00pm on the Friday of the first week of class, you will be eligible for a refund of 100% of the tuition fee paid minus $600.00CAD (the registration deposit of $250.00CAD and $350.00CAD week earned)
- If you withdraw after registration and before 4:00pm on the Friday of the second week of class, you will be eligible for a refund of 100% of the tuition fee paid minus $950.00 CAD (the registration deposit of $250.00CAD and $700.00CAD weeks earned)
- If you withdraw after registration and before 4:00pm on the Friday of the third week of class, you will be eligible for a refund of 100% of the tuition fee paid minus $ 1300.00CAD ( the registration deposit of $250.00CAD and $1050.00CAD weeks earned)
- No tuition refunds will be granted after the third week of classes.
Are textbook fees refundable?
Once issued textbook fees are non-refundable.
If there is a delay, can I defer my study and payment to a different session?
A one-time transfer to a subsequent session within the same year is permitted provided the Administration Office is notified prior to the start date of the program.
Study Permits and Visas:I am not a Canadian resident, do I need to apply for a permit?
Depending on which country you are leaving from there are certain documents you may need to travel, study and work in Canada. They may include one or more of the following:
- Diplomatic/Official VISA
- Visitor/Temporary Resident VISA / study periods less than 6 months
- Study permit / study periods of 6 months or more
- Work Permit

Do I need a study permit?
Our ESL programs range from 8 weeks to 28 weeks per Stage. If you plan to study less than 6 months, you do not require a study permit. Students who study for more than 6 months require a study permit.
